Hi Alicia - loving the diary entries. When you said you artworked your photos up to show the journalist some layouts, I'm curious what this looks like/involves. Would you say this is preferable to do this when pitching travel stories? I struggle with the concept of travel pitching as I'm not a writer so I'm unsure of how to present the story. Would you recommend pitching after the fact ie after the travels, with the photos? Thanks so much!
Hi Pippa - thanks so much :) I'd be super happy to post what. I'm sending to the journalist - will finish it today so will post it as an extra article this week. Basically I've split the pitch into two stories - one interiors story which will fit one magazine, (a big US interiors online platform), and then more of a photo essay about Taormina, featuring the hotel as well but with extra imagery of the surrounding area. This second one needs a bit of an angle - '24 hours in...' or something. The ex-journalist in me always feels like there needs to be a bit of a thread / story / hook for a piece like this so that's what I'm working on today. This contact is not someone i've worked with before so I pitched to her before I went, she came back saying she really liked my work and to send imagery when I get back. If it goes well, i'll likely be able to get a commission in the future but at the beginning, if you haven't worked with someone before, it's all about making the contact, and proving the quality of your work I think. Hope that helps :)
