I'm curious to know if the editorial commissioned for Vogue Portugal online were paid gigs, or expenses only, or any other arrangement?

Hi Elisa! I didn’t get any budget from Vogue Portugal for the online editorials, I paid for everything myself 😅 This is quite common especially if you approach the magazine with an idea as opposed to them reaching out to you with an idea already in place. I’m planning to film a TikTok soon with a breakdown of one of my editorial costs so hopefully that’ll be useful to people! Xx

would love to see the cost breakdown too Isabelle, as I've only really heard it from the perspective of Carly who combines it with a paid commercial job, giving a paid incentive for a team to travel with her. I wondered if the model/mua would fund their own travel for the same reason as you (exposure/portfolio building) or if you covered everything + also paid them a day rate. appreciate all your insight so far and your work is so beautiful! x

Hi! For the Lanzarote shoot, I covered everything except the stylist’s and HMUA’s costs - they were happy to pay for their flights/baggage for the reason of portfolio/exposure as you say. Not all team members will be happy to do this but if you’ve got a great magazine and concept then you might be able to pick and choose someone who will. I paid the model’s flight, the Airbnb, car hire, food etc. When I do a case study for this shoot on my substack, I’ll do a full breakdown but I hope that helps! 🖤

thank you so much for such a speedy reply! that's really encouraging to know. I felt a bit defeated at the prospect of having to shell out thousands to pull something like this off without a commercial gig to balance it out x

Of course, happy to help! The costs of editorial is such a barrier - this one did cost me a lot partly because of the film/handprinting side too but I knew it was going to be worth it to bring something new to my portfolio. And I did try to get a commercial job on the same trip but it didn’t work out in the end! Sometimes it’s a leap of faith I guess! Xx
